SANTA MONICA and NASHVILLE, Tenn. (NetNewz.tv / TMX) – A teenager who has never before played a Major League Baseball game has signed a record $82 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Monday.
Jackson Chourio, MLB Pipeline’s No. 2 overall prospect, signed an eight-year contract worth $82 million with the Brewers on Monday, with options for 2032 and 2033 at $25 million each. The deal marks a record for a player with no MLB experience.
The 19-year-old has played just six games of Triple-A baseball, the highest level of the minor leagues, with Nashville this past season. He received a $1.8 million signing bonus in 2021 when he joined the Brewers organization from Venezuela, and became the first player in Brewers history to be named minor league player of the year twice.
“Jackson has proven to be one of the elite young prospects in all of baseball,” general manager Matt Arnold said in a statement. “We are extremely excited to make this unprecedented commitment to a player we believe to be a generational talent who has all the tools to be the face of our franchise. We are thrilled to have Jackson in a Brewers uniform for many years to come.”
Originally Maracaibo, Venezuela, Chourio began his time in the Brewers organization as a shortstop, but in 2022 moved to full-time outfielder. Across 128 games with Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville in 2023, he batted .283 with a .338 on-base percentage, 22 home runs, 91 RBIs and 44 steals.
The long-term deal would cover Chourio’s period of arbitration eligibility, along with what would have been his first two seasons after free agency. He could debut at the start of the 2024 season, and he’s set to wear No. 11
The deal was announced during the Winter Major League Baseball Meetings that take place between the end of the World Series and the beginning of Spring Training. New and renewed player contracts are announced during the Winter Meetings. The 2024 Winter Meeting location is yet to be announced.
